The approach aims to determine the relevance of the upper cervical spine in both headache and migraine presentations, using a manual examination of the small movements of C1-C3.

Head pain is a result of sensitisation of the trigeminocervical nucleus in the brainstem. Identification of segments involved in the headache presentation is important, as these segments refer information into the (TCN) and are a potential cause of the sensitisation.

This treatment differs from other manual approaches to the neck, as it specifically addresses the cause, not the effect of the headache process.
